Growing Chefs - all about vitamins!

Look at our garden growing!  We have beans almost ready to eat!  There are many hanging on the plants now!

The radish leaves are ready for us to pick and eat.

This is the lettuce we are growing.  We will be eating these today.

Here we are - snipping off the leaves of the beets for our salad!

Everyone got a chance to add greens to our salad.

Our chefs came for another visit today.  Our lesson was all about vitamins and how they help our body.   See what vitamins we get from our salad ingredients...
We learned that different vitamins help us in different ways... they give us strong bones and teeth, good eye sight, help our blood clot, and fill us with energy!
Here are the ingredients we need for our salad dressing...

And here are the salad greens...all ready for us to make our own salads!

We top our salads with the salad dressing we help make!

Look at these  "mouth-watering" salads!

EVERYONE tried the salads and MANY of us went back for seconds!!  What a FUN and NUTRITIOUS day!!!

Our Pigs are "getting some colour"!

Our paper mache pigs are dry and ready to be painted!    We could choose whatever colour we wanted.

Adding some personality...

We finished painting our pigs!  Now they are drying.  We can't wait to add the finishing touches...tails and ears!!

Orion and the dark

Today we had a BLG reader named Negar.  She read a book called Orion and the dark.

The photo on the top is the front cover the one the on the bottom is our favourite page.  This book is about Orion being scared of everything.  If it sounds good to you read it.

Growing Chefs

Our chefs came back for another great lesson!  Today we learned all about seeds and different types of lettuces.  There were so many seeds and lettuces to try!
The first challenge was to see if we could match the seeds on one tray with the foods on the 2nd tray!  We ALL knew the popcorn seeds, but the rest of the seeds were trickier!  There were sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp, chia, and sesame seeds.

Can you tell which seed is which??

A feast waiting for all of us to try!  The salad greens included sprouts, peas shoots, arugula and romaine.  AND, our chefs even made some humus for us to enjoy with our salad!  Everyone was so adventurous and tried everything on the plates.  One of our favourite seeds was CHIA!!

Paper Mache begins!

We just finished reading the story Charlotte's Web and we all fell in love with Wilbur - "Some Pig"!

AND, in math we are learning about money.  WELL... where do we save our money?  In a piggy bank!!

So we are making paper mache piggy banks!!!  It is a VERY messy art project, but it sure is FUN!

Everything we need is ready.  We all helped tear the newspaper strips!

Ms. Quon made the paste - just flour and water.

Here we go!!  Stick your paper strips in the paste.  Wipe off the extra paste and stick it on your balloon.  Be VERY CAREFUL!  We don't want our Pigs to POP!!

We needed to do two layers of paper and paste.  It was tricky wrapping the strips around the legs and snout!

Almost done!  The paste on our hands (and clothes!) was drying and getting HARD!

The pigs are ready to sit and dry!  It will take a good week for them to dry enough before we pop the balloons!  Then we can paint them and name them!

Van Dusen Gardens

We were so excited about our field trip today to Van Dusen Gardens!  Many of us remembered this trip from last year - it was one of our favourite places to visit so we couldn't wait to go again!  Here are some pictures of our "perfect" day.

First activity... "Art in the Park"
Our challenge was to collect "nature" from the grounds around the Great Lawn and then work together to create a "piece of art".  We had 5 minutes to gather all our materials.  Then we had a minute to sit and discuss our plans.  Finally we got down to work to make something unique!

Our completed pieces...
Title:  "Circle of a Heart"
Title:  "Indiana Jones Egg Nest"
Title:  "Campfire in the Square"

Our next activity...
Using our senses we write a poem titled "Under the trees..."

We find a spot under a tree and take a moment to look and listen and smell and touch, and...
...feel
Here are just a few of our original poems.  Please come by the classroom to enjoy them all!

Finally...we head over to the MAZE!

It was SO much fun running in and out of the maze with our friends.  Some of us went through it over a dozen times! It was easy for many of the  kids but the teachers had a very hard time!!  Thank goodness there were many children who knew the way out!

What a GREAT DAY!  The bus ride back to school was peaceful as we were a tired bunch!
