Vegetables from around the world!

Growing Chefs was back this week.  We were all encouraged to bring a vegetable we eat at home to share with the class.  Many of the children who remembered to bring in a vegetable also told us a little bit about the vegetable and how their family prepares it!  After talking about all the different vegetables, we all got to sample them!  YUM!

Here are some of the vegetables we brought in.  There was a zucchini, a Japanese radish, a giant carrot, tomatoes and kale - in many forms:  a plant, freshly picked AND KALE CHIPS!!
One of our chefs is busily chopping up vegetables for us to try.  Also,  can you see our garden of vegetables growing in the window!!??

Here are the vegetables, ready for us to sample - there are peppers and peas and asparagus AND EVEN some chickpeas!

Everyone eagerly dives in!  It was so good to see the whole class try these fresh and healthy vegetables!

Happy Earth day !

Here is the recipe for the Earth.

You need these ingredients.

First we spread the "water" on our rice cakes

Then we added the land!  "Tell me the continents, tell me the continents, tell me if you can"!  We know there are 7 continents, but it is hard putting them in the right place!

Once we were done, we ate our "EARTH"!!
Who knew the earth would taste so good!!

...And Nick

Today we got a book from Anthony our BLG reader. This is the cover of the book called ...And Nick. This story is about a little mouse that has 3 big brothers named Mick, Rick, Vick.  They say that Nick's flower is not special because the flower was so small and the next day early in the morning Nick 's flower had bloomed.

This is our favourite page in the book .  We like it because Nick is in the back with his little flower and his brothers are in the front with they're big flower's.

Growing Chefs!

Our class is participating in the Growing Chefs program this Spring!  Three chefs come to our classroom every other week.  They teach us all about gardening.  We talked about what plants need, why gardening and farming is so important and how we can plant a garden, even in the classroom!

The first week, we looked at different seeds and helped to plant our classroom garden...

We planted:  lettuce, beans, snowpeas, radishes and beets!
We looked at all the seeds.  Some were big and others were very tiny!
Then everyone had a turn to plant something!

Week 2... LOOK!  The arugula has sprouted!!!

These are radishes.
And.... look at our snow peas!!!  They came up very quickly!

Also in our 2nd lesson, we played a "vegetable guessing game"!  The chefs brought in some vegetables that many of us had never heard of or tasted.

Do you know the names of any of these vegetables??

After we learned about the vegetables, everyone had a chance to try them.  Many of us loved the sun choke, the fennel and the avocado!!  Maybe we will ask our families to try them at home!
